Homeland Security
Rick Noriega has personally served on the frontlines protecting our homeland. As the Laredo Border Sector Commander with the National Guard, he worked with local, state, and federal agencies to address the problems at the border, including cracking down on the drug smugglers and human traffickers that bring lawlessness into America. As a public official, Noriega took the lessons learned from anti-terrorism training courses to enact policies to provide greater safeguards against potentially dangerous materials. For example, as a state legislator, he passed legislation to restrict the sale of ammonium nitrate, a fertilizer compound that was used by Timothy McVeigh to create his deadly bomb.
Noriega will first make sure that those on the frontlines have all the tools they need to secure our border -- not a fence, which won't work -- but the latest technology to track, monitor, and protect our border. He'll make sure we finally take port security seriously by making a real commitment to cargo screening, fully fund first responders like police and firefighters, and improve security at likely terrorist targets.
